The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has granted access to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, to inspect materials used in the September 21, 2024, Edo State governorship election. This comes after initial complaints from the party that it was denied access during an attempt to inspect the materials on Monday.
Ighodalo is challenging the election of Edo governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who emerged victorious with 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo’s 247,274 votes. The PDP and Ighodalo allege discrepancies in the electoral process and are seeking to use the inspection of election materials as part of their legal challenge to the results.
The inspection of election materials, including ballot papers, result sheets, and other sensitive items, is a key step in contesting election results in Nigeria. According to the country’s electoral law, parties challenging the outcome of an election are entitled to examine these materials to gather evidence for their case in court.
INEC’s initial refusal to grant access sparked concerns within the PDP, as the party viewed this as a potential hindrance to their efforts to mount a credible challenge. However, following legal pressure and public outcry, the electoral body has now reversed its stance and given the PDP the green light to conduct the inspection.
In a statement, the PDP expressed relief at the development, stating that the move was a positive step toward ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process. The party reiterated its commitment to pursuing the matter through legal channels, believing that a thorough examination of the election materials would reveal irregularities that could potentially overturn the results in their favor.
Asue Ighodalo, speaking through his campaign team, emphasized that the inspection is crucial in their quest for justice. “This election was marred by numerous irregularities, and we are confident that the evidence will speak for itself,” he said. Ighodalo added that the party remains committed to upholding the democratic process and ensuring that the true will of the Edo people is reflected.
INEC, on its part, reassured the public that it remains neutral and committed to upholding the integrity of the election process. The commission stated that the decision to grant access to the PDP and Ighodalo aligns with its commitment to transparency and fairness. INEC also emphasized that the process of inspecting election materials is a normal and routine part of post-election legal proceedings, and the body will fully cooperate with all parties involved.
The legal challenge by the PDP is expected to move forward as the inspection proceeds, with both sides preparing to present their cases before the election tribunal. Political observers are closely watching the developments, as the case has the potential to shape future election disputes in Nigeria, particularly in light of growing concerns over electoral transparency and fairness.
For now, the spotlight remains on the PDP’s efforts to build a solid case against Okpebholo’s victory, while the governor-elect prepares for his swearing-in, confident that the election results will stand the test of judicial scrutiny.
