In a decisive move to tackle rising security concerns in Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo on Monday convened a high-level security stakeholders’ meeting in Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government Area.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the closed-door meeting brought together prominent political figures, religious and traditional leaders, heads of security agencies, and other critical stakeholders to deliberate on the unique security challenges facing Edo North.
Governor Okpebholo, speaking after the meeting, declared that under his leadership, criminal elements would not be allowed to destabilize the state. He pledged decisive action against insecurity and promised to make the state uninhabitable for perpetrators of violence.
“The era of lawlessness is over. We will confront insecurity head-on and ensure that Edo remains safe for all who live and work here,” the Governor stated.
Among those in attendance were Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; former Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Minister of State for Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh; former Deputy Governors Peter Obadan and Philip Shaibu; former Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe; and former Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba.
The forum also had in attendance traditional rulers, religious leaders, senior security personnel, and grassroots stakeholders.
Governor Okpebholo explained that the meeting was essential to coordinate community-level collaboration with security agencies, enhance intelligence sharing, and develop tailored responses to local security threats.
“We had fruitful deliberations and arrived at a common understanding on actionable steps forward. Edo people should expect a visible improvement in security outcomes as we begin implementing our resolutions,” he said.
Commending the initiative, Senator Adams Oshiomhole lauded Governor Okpebholo for his proactive approach, noting that it was the first time a sitting governor had convened such a broad-based engagement on security in the region.
“The Governor has shown leadership by engaging directly with stakeholders on ground. He has provided operational support such as vehicles and motorcycles to law enforcement agencies and emphasized the importance of community collaboration,” Oshiomhole noted.
He added that the people of Edo North have pledged their support and confidence in the Governor’s leadership and will continue to work closely with security agencies.
Also speaking, Bishop Gabriel Dunia of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi commended the inclusive nature of the meeting and called for continued cooperation among all parties to ensure lasting peace.
Traditional rulers, led by His Royal Highness Mallam Ali Suleiman, expressed confidence in the Governor’s commitment and pledged to strengthen community-based efforts to support state-wide security initiatives.
“This gathering is historic and has reassured us of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property. We stand ready to work closely with security agencies to restore peace and order,” HRH Suleiman said.
The strategic meeting is expected to mark the beginning of a coordinated and sustained security initiative focused on restoring peace, fostering collaboration, and enhancing safety across Edo State.
