In a solemn address at the 7th International Conference on Love and Tolerance in Nigeria, themed “Harmony through Compassion: Embracing Diversity in Pursuit of Peace,” the Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, expressed grave concerns regarding the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria, emphasizing its detrimental impact on the nation’s ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Dr. Ochogwu highlighted that the current state of affairs in the country has significantly hindered Nigeria’s progress towards the SDGs, necessitating urgent and decisive action. He emphasized the imperative for Nigerians to embrace love and tolerance as fundamental pillars for sustainable development and peaceful coexistence.
Drawing attention to the global landscape, Dr. Ochogwu underscored the multifaceted challenges confronting the world, including socio-economic downturns, widening poverty gaps, marginalization, inequality, climate change, violent conflicts, and socio-political and ethno-religious tensions. He lamented that Nigeria continues to grapple with heightened tensions and violent confrontations, primarily stemming from the inability to manage its diverse religious and cultural landscape effectively.
The Director-General condemned the activities of corrupt political leaders who exacerbate issues such as nepotism, tribalism, marginalization, and inequality, thereby exacerbating the challenges of diversity management in the country. He emphasized that the untapped potential of Nigeria’s diversity remains a significant obstacle to achieving the SDGs, underscoring the urgent need for concerted action.

Dr. Ochogwu called upon all stakeholders in the peace and security domain to collaborate effectively in reversing the prevailing negative trends. He emphasized the crucial role of both individuals and institutions in fostering effective diversity management for peaceful coexistence, stability, and development.
Echoing similar sentiments, President of Ufuk Dialogue, Mr. Emrah Ilgen, emphasized the transformative power of love and tolerance in fostering global unity. He stressed the importance of understanding, kindness, and acceptance in bridging cultural and ideological divides, calling for concerted efforts to address issues such as prejudice and discrimination through education and open dialogue.
In his remarks, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Hon. Usman Bello, emphasized the need for Nigeria to embrace compassion and acceptance towards all individuals, regardless of differences. He urged a departure from narrow-minded thinking and called for collective efforts to promote tolerance and compassion as essential ingredients for national cohesion and progress.
The collective consensus at the conference underscored the urgency of embracing love, tolerance, and compassion as guiding principles for overcoming Nigeria’s current challenges and advancing towards a future characterized by peace, prosperity, and inclusive development.
