IPCR urges collective action for peace in Nigeria

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has called on government, security agencies, the private sector, the media, and religious and traditional leaders to work together in promoting peace across Nigeria.

The appeal was made in Abuja during events marking the Institute’s 25th anniversary, celebrated alongside the 2025 International Day of Peace with the theme “Act Now for a Peaceful World.”

Addressing a press conference, IPCR Director-General, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, stressed that peace cannot be postponed or left to a few actors. “It requires immediate, sustained, and coordinated action from individuals, institutions, and nations,” he said.

Ochogwu highlighted the Institute’s contributions over the past 25 years, including training thousands of peace practitioners, mediators, and community leaders, as well as interventions in communal disputes, electoral violence prevention, and religious reconciliation. He noted that IPCR’s early warning systems and rapid response mechanisms had prevented the escalation of conflicts nationwide.

He urged government to prioritize conflict prevention and invest in peacebuilding infrastructure, while advising the media to embrace conflict-sensitive reporting and religious and traditional leaders to use their influence to foster tolerance.

As part of its anniversary activities, IPCR unveiled interfaith prayers, a peace walk, commemorative lectures, and a “Sports for Peace and Mental Health Clinic,” an initiative designed to address trauma and promote community healing through physical activity and mental health support.

“Peace is both a destination and a journey,” Ochogwu said, reaffirming the institute’s mission. “The past 25 years have shown that sustainable peace is possible when we act with determination and unity. The time for peace is always now.”
