The Supreme Court has affirmed Senator Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected Governor of Edo State, upholding his victory in the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
In a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Lawal Garba on Wednesday, a five-member panel of the Apex Court dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, for lack of merit.
The court ruled that the appellants failed to substantiate allegations of over-voting, electoral malpractice, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. It noted that Ighodalo challenged results from only 395 out of 4,519 polling units and presented 19 witnesses, whose testimonies did not sufficiently support his claims.
The ruling puts to rest the legal battle over the Edo governorship election, affirming Okpebholo as the legitimate winner.
