Amnesty International has condemned the violent attack on supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a campaign solidarity walk in Kaduna, calling for an impartial and effective investigation into the incident.
The rights organisation said several people were injured during the attack, which occurred as supporters of ADC governorship candidate Isa Ashiru participated in a solidarity procession in Kaduna metropolis.
Amnesty International said videos circulating online appeared to show suspected thugs attacking the protesters, vandalising vehicles and confiscating campaign banners.
It described the incident as an apparent violation of electoral rights and fundamental human rights, urging security agencies to investigate the violence and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice through fair legal proceedings.
The organisation stressed that political parties have the right to canvass for support in accordance with Nigeria’s electoral laws, while security agencies have a responsibility to protect the rights and safety of supporters regardless of their political affiliation.
“Campaigning is a legitimate democratic process that any political party can embark upon,” Amnesty International said, warning that political violence threatens peaceful political participation and respect for citizens’ rights.
The rights group called on all political parties and their supporters to demonstrate commitment to peaceful democratic engagement by respecting the political choices and campaign activities of others.
It also urged authorities to identify those suspected of orchestrating the Kaduna violence and ensure that anyone found culpable faces justice through fair trials.
