Maida emphasizes transparency in telecom regulation during visit to communications minister

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), affirmed his commitment to transparency as the cornerstone of his leadership during a recent courtesy visit to the Honorable Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. The visit aimed to discuss key priorities and strategies since assuming office in October 2023.

According to NCC Director, Public Affairs Reuben Muoka, Dr. Maida emphasized the pivotal role of transparency in fostering a resilient, accountable, and efficient institution. He highlighted the importance of self-regulation and expressed confidence that transparency would drive the Commission towards operational excellence and goal achievement.

Commending Dr. Tijani’s transparent leadership style, Dr. Maida acknowledged the Minister’s exemplary principles, stating, “It is an attribute that has the potential to bring about a transformed industry that is accountable to both the people and the industry players.”

Dr. Maida conveyed his appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading a critical sector of the economy. During the meeting, he shared his vision and priorities for the Commission, aligning them with the 5-Pillars of the Strategic Plan unveiled by the Minister.

The NCC boss identified Quality of Experience (QoE) and broadband connectivity as top priorities. He emphasized the non-negotiable nature of QoE compliance and the significance of broadband connectivity in driving the digital economy and financial inclusion, aligning with the Ministry’s agenda.

Dr. Maida underscored the need to leverage technological innovations, particularly the 5G revolution, to create opportunities within the industry and enhance connectivity. He revealed that an ongoing review of internal processes at the Commission aims to improve efficiency and responsiveness through digitization.

“In all these,” Dr. Maida stated, “the goal is for the Commission to achieve optimal operational excellence, underpinning success in all priority areas for significant growth in the telecommunications industry.”

Reflecting on his visit to the Digital Bridge Institute in Lagos, Dr. Maida emphasized the institute’s vast potential in driving a knowledge-based economy, aligning with the “Knowledge Pillar” of the Minister’s Strategic Plan. He outlined plans to revamp, retool, and redirect the institute to align with the Commission’s objectives.

In response, Dr. Tijani welcomed Dr. Maida, acknowledging the NCC’s crucial role in achieving the nation’s digital aspirations. He expressed respect for the agency’s work and pledged full collaboration to tap into its quality for the greater benefit of the country.
