The Nigerian Army on Thursday witnessed a seamless change of command as Major General Waidi Shaibu formally assumed office as the 25th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) following a colourful handing and taking over ceremony at the Army Headquarters, Abuja.

In a statement, Acting Director, Army Public Relations Lieut. Col. Appolonia Anele said the event marked the official transition of leadership between Major General Waidi Shaibu and the newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede.

In his inaugural address, Major General Shaibu commended his predecessor for his exceptional leadership, mentorship, and immense contributions to the growth of the Nigerian Army. He lauded General Oluyede’s achievements, particularly in equipment procurement, infrastructural development, and the “Soldier First” initiative — a policy that prioritized troop welfare and operational readiness.

The new Army Chief pledged to consolidate on the gains recorded under his predecessor and strengthen inter-agency collaboration to enhance national security. He emphasized his commitment to improving operational efficiency, troop morale, and swift response to emerging security threats.

“I salute the courage, passion, resilience, and discipline of our troops in the field. Their sacrifices remain the cornerstone of our collective success,” Shaibu stated.

While expressing gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in him, Major General Shaibu led senior officers in observing a minute of silence in honour of fallen heroes.

In his valedictory remarks, the outgone COAS and new CDS, Lieutenant General Oluyede, thanked President Tinubu for his visionary leadership and the opportunity to serve in both capacities. He also commended officers and soldiers for their unwavering loyalty and professionalism, urging them to accord the same support to his successor.

“The mission remains the same — to ensure the security of lives and defend the territorial integrity of our nation,” he said.

Earlier, the immediate past Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim, hailed General Oluyede’s tenure as selfless and visionary, noting that his impact on the Army will endure in history.

Highlights of the ceremony included the signing of the handing and taking over notes, decoration of the new COAS with the Army Headquarters insignia, inspection of the quarter guard, and group photographs with principal staff officers and field commanders.
