The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has emphasized the critical role of Research and Development (R&D) in enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
According to Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the CAS stated this while addressing the NAF Inter-Command Research and Development Competition at NAF Base, Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja, as part of the 60th Anniversary celebrations,
Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted the importance of developing indigenous capabilities for manufacturing and maintaining aircraft.
Reflecting on past challenges, Air Marshal Abubakar recounted the premature grounding of the Jaguar and MiG 21 aircraft fleets due to technical shortcomings and lack of spare parts, underscoring the necessity of robust R&D efforts. “These experiences highlight the indispensable role of Research and Development in NAF’s operations,” he stated.
Air Marshal Abubakar praised NAF’s achievements in R&D, citing innovations such as the Tsaigumi UAV, rocket launchers, heat shields, and the weaponization of Alpha Jet aircraft. He announced the installation of eight CNC machines at the Air Force Research and Development Centre in Osogbo and an impending technology transfer agreement with a European company for the production of 57mm rocket armament. These initiatives, he noted, reflect NAF’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology and strategic partnerships.
The event also featured an address by Air Vice Marshal MN Onyebashi, Chief of Standard and Evaluation, who outlined the competition’s aim to present innovative solutions for operational and maintenance challenges within the NAF.
The ceremony was attended by senior officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and NAF, alongside participants from various NAF Commands nationwide.
