The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has received assurances that the delivery dates for the AH-1Z attack helicopters, purchased by the Federal Government, remain on track.
In a statement Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet said this confirmation was made during the first Programme Management Review (PMR) meeting, where the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Sayo Olatunde, met with officials from the United States Government and Bell Textron Company.
The 5-day meeting, which commenced on July 16, 2024, at NAF Headquarters, focused on reviewing progress made on the manufacture of the helicopters, ensuring a smooth transition, and providing technical guidance to the NAF. This collaboration underscores the strong partnership between Nigeria and the US in enhancing the country’s air power capabilities.
During the meeting, Air Vice Marshal Olatunde highlighted that the PMR is crucial for the timely delivery of the AH-1Z attack helicopters, which will significantly boost NAF’s close air support and ground attack capabilities, as well as its modernization efforts. He emphasized that the AH-1Z helicopters will enhance NAF’s firepower and operational capabilities, particularly in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.
Mr. Kevin Stone, the US Government AH-1Z Program Management Office team leader, noted that the collaboration between NAF and the US military reflects their shared commitment to regional stability, peace, and security. He added that the successful implementation of the PMR is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s ability to tackle security challenges and ensure the safety of its citizens. A key area of discussion was the follow-up sustainment case, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and reducing downtime through comprehensive support services.
