Operation DELTA SANITY: Nigerian Navy deactivates illegal refining sites, seizes equipment Bayelsa

Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH, as part of Operation DELTA SANITY, on Monday, July 15, 2024, made significant strides in the fight against illegal oil refining in the Niger Delta region. The Navy discovered and deactivated three illegal refining sites in Gbaran Community, which were laden with an unspecified amount of stolen crude oil.

The operation underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to eradicating illegal activities that threaten the nation’s economy and environment. The discovery of these sites highlights the ongoing issue of crude oil theft and the sophisticated methods employed by perpetrators.

In addition to deactivating the illegal refining sites, the Navy’s patrol team intercepted and impounded a 200-horsepower boat and four welded metal drums in Agbura, Bayelsa State. These items are suspected to be materials meant for the construction of additional illegal refining sites, indicating a broader network of criminal activity.

The successful operation in Gbaran Community and Agbura demonstrates the effectiveness of the Nigerian Navy’s patrol and surveillance efforts under Operation DELTA SANITY. The initiative aims to disrupt and dismantle illegal refining operations, ensuring the protection of the nation’s resources and the sustainability of its environment.

Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Central Naval Command, praised the efforts of the personnel involved in the operation. He reiterated the Navy’s resolve to continue its operations against illegal oil activities and urged community members to support these efforts by reporting suspicious activities.

“The discovery and deactivation of these illegal refining sites are a testament to the Nigerian Navy’s dedication to safeguarding our national resources. We will continue to pursue and dismantle these criminal networks to ensure economic stability and environmental protection,” Rear Admiral Ogalla stated.

The Nigerian Navy’s proactive measures, as seen in this recent operation, reflect a broader strategy to enhance maritime security and combat illegal activities in the Niger Delta region. The success of Operation DELTA SANITY serves as a deterrent to those involved in illegal oil refining and emphasizes the Navy’s commitment to upholding the law and protecting Nigeria’s resources.

The ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Navy are crucial in addressing the complex challenges posed by illegal oil refining, and the recent operation marks a significant step forward in securing the nation’s oil infrastructure and preserving its natural environment.
