The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of air power in counter-insurgency operations, with renewed focus on improving air-to-ground integration and doctrinal development.
This formed the highlight of a courtesy visit by the Director General of the Air Power Centre of Excellence, PO Obeya, to the Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre on April 17, 2026.
During the visit, Air Vice Marshal Obeya held strategic discussions with the Commandant of the Centre, GI Jibia, focusing on strengthening operational effectiveness, advancing doctrinal frameworks, and enhancing joint operations within the Service.
Central to the discussions was the need to deepen Air-to-Ground Integration (AGI), a critical component in modern counter-insurgency campaigns. The approach ensures effective coordination between air assets and ground forces, enabling precise, intelligence-driven operations and rapid response in complex and asymmetric combat environments.
The engagement also underscored the importance of continuous professional military education and capacity building in equipping personnel to meet evolving security challenges. The Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre was noted as playing a key role in developing skilled air power practitioners capable of operating in dynamic threat environments.
NAF authorities stated that the initiative aligns with the strategic vision of the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Kelvin Aneke, whose leadership has prioritised innovation, integration, and operational excellence in the deployment of air power.
The Service reiterated that strengthening internal collaboration and refining operational frameworks would further enhance its readiness and effectiveness in ongoing counter-insurgency efforts, as well as contribute to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
