The NNPC Limited, in collaboration with Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, and the University of Lagos, has commissioned and donated a newly constructed Geosciences Centre of Excellence to the university.
The facility, inaugurated on Friday, is designed to advance geosciences education and research in Nigeria. It was officially unveiled by the Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services Ltd. (NUIMS), Mr. Olanrewaju Igandan, alongside the Managing Director of SNEPCo, Mr. Ronald Adams; NCDMB’s Director of Capacity Building, Mr. Abayomi Bamidele; Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule; and the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunsola.
The Centre features a 250-seat auditorium, fully equipped geoscience and instrumentation laboratories, a rock preparation workshop, and specialized laboratories covering hydrogeology, mineralogy, environmental geology, sedimentary and palaeoenvironmental sciences. Additional facilities include a seismic interpretation room, a modern library, a digital museum, and collaborative workspaces for students and researchers.
To ensure uninterrupted operations, the Centre is supported by a 600 kVA transformer, a 40 kVA solar power system, and a field investigation coaster bus.
Stakeholders noted that the initiative is aimed at bridging the gap between academia, industry, and government, providing students and researchers with practical access to modern energy technologies. The Centre is also expected to reduce the oil and gas sector’s dependence on foreign facilities for testing and training, while strengthening local expertise in the energy industry.
NNPC Limited reaffirmed its commitment to capacity building and national development, emphasizing the importance of strategic partnerships in securing a sustainable energy future for Nigeria.
