NAFDAC busts ₦2bn counterfeit alcohol ring at Lagos trade fair complex

  • Agency uncovers over 20 illegal stores, arrests two suspects in major enforcement raid

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a large-scale counterfeit alcoholic beverage operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, seizing products valued at more than ₦2 billion.

The operation, carried out by operatives of the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement (I&E) Directorate, followed credible intelligence on suspected illegal activities concealed in makeshift stores reportedly used as parking spaces within the complex.

NAFDAC said the raid exposed more than 20 illegal stores allegedly involved in the counterfeiting and revalidation of alcoholic beverages, as well as the stockpiling of prohibited imported products.

According to the agency, its operatives discovered suspects allegedly blending and counterfeiting popular alcoholic beverage brands, alongside activities involving the revalidation of expired and unsafe drinks for resale to unsuspecting consumers.

Two suspects were arrested during the operation, while the seized products were evacuated. The agency put the estimated value of the recovered items at over ₦2 billion.

The discovery has raised fresh concerns about the circulation of counterfeit and potentially unsafe alcoholic beverages in the Nigerian market, particularly the risks such products pose to public health and consumer safety.

Counterfeit drinks and improperly revalidated expired beverages may contain undisclosed or harmful substances, while misleading labels and packaging can prevent consumers from distinguishing genuine products from unsafe alternatives.

NAFDAC reiterated the importance of public vigilance and urged Nigerians to report suspected cases of illegal manufacturing, product revalidation and the sale of counterfeit or prohibited products.

The agency advised members of the public to channel relevant information through its official complaints line, 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322).

The enforcement operation underscores the agency’s ongoing efforts to curb the circulation of falsified and substandard regulated products and protect consumers from the health hazards associated with unsafe alcoholic beverages.

NAFDAC’s investigation is expected to establish the full extent of the alleged operation and identify other individuals or networks that may be connected to the activities.
