NAFDAC seizes ₦300m banned alcohol in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized alcoholic beverages worth an estimated ₦300 million packaged in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles below 200 millilitres in Lagos State.

The agency also shut down outlets and arrested distributors and retailers found selling the prohibited products during enforcement operations conducted at Ile-Epo Market.

Further raids were carried out at Ojuwoye Market in Mushin and Oke-Arin Market on Lagos Island, where NAFDAC officials evacuated several cartons of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below the approved 200ml threshold.

Preliminary investigations indicated that some distributors and retailers had allegedly been hoarding the banned products amid increased demand and rising market prices.

NAFDAC reiterated that the prohibition on the manufacture, distribution, sale and marketing of alcoholic beverages in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml remains in force.

The agency warned distributors, retailers and other operators in the alcoholic beverage supply chain against violating the directive, stressing that those found dealing in the prohibited products would face regulatory sanctions.

NAFDAC urged traders and members of the public to desist from stocking or selling the affected products and to comply fully with the existing regulatory requirements.
