The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has warned motorists and vehicle owners against driving vehicles without valid licence plates or using vehicles with concealed, defaced or deliberately faded registration numbers.
The Command also warned against the use of fake diplomatic number plates or diplomatic plates by unauthorised persons within the Federal Capital Territory.
According to Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command, Abuja SP Josephine Adeh, the warning was issued by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, following the increasing use of vehicles with questionable or obscured registration numbers, particularly SUVs, which the Command said could be exploited by criminal elements to evade identification, detection and arrest.
According to the police, the proliferation of such vehicles poses serious security concerns in the FCT, where effective identification and tracking of vehicles are critical to preventing and investigating criminal activities.
The Commissioner directed that motorists found operating vehicles in violation of existing laws should be arrested and immediately prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He further ordered police officers across the FCT to intensify enforcement of regulations governing vehicle identification, licence plates and the use of tinted glasses.
Sanusi, however, directed officers to conduct the enforcement exercise professionally and warned against using it as an avenue for extortion or harassment of motorists.
The Command urged residents to support the police in maintaining security across the nation’s capital, stressing that effective policing requires the cooperation of members of the public.
Residents were also advised to report suspicious vehicles, persons or activities to the nearest police station or through the FCT Police Command emergency telephone numbers: 08032003913 and 08028940883.
