The Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Adamu Bello, welcomed a high-level delegation from the U.S. Embassy at NAPTIP headquarters today.
The delegation was led by Thaddaeus Hoyt of the Overseas Criminal Investigations Unit, and included Jessica Awan from the embassy.
The meeting focused on broadening collaborative efforts in the fight against human trafficking, an issue of pressing concern for both Nigeria and the United States. Speaking at the event, Thaddaeus Hoyt highlighted the purpose of the visit as an opportunity to explore and deepen areas of partnership, particularly in investigation strategies aimed at tackling emerging and sophisticated trends in global human trafficking.
He emphasized that tackling human trafficking requires a proactive approach that keeps pace with criminal innovations across borders.
In response, Director General Binta Adamu Bello praised the U.S. Embassy’s longstanding support for Nigeria’s anti-trafficking efforts. She noted the importance of international collaboration, particularly with agencies like the Overseas Criminal Investigations Unit, to effectively counteract the complex networks that enable trafficking.
Bello expressed that the Agency relies on these critical partnerships to enhance its capacity for victim protection, offender prosecution, and public education.
“We are immensely grateful for the U.S. Embassy’s ongoing support. Strengthening our investigative resources and building on our collaborative framework with our partners will enable us to keep up with new trafficking trends that threaten the safety of vulnerable populations,” said Bello.
Director General Bello also requested additional technical support, stressing that advancements in technology and investigative practices would be crucial for NAPTIP to better track trafficking operations, intercept perpetrators, and protect victims.
Jessica Awan from the U.S. Embassy expressed commitment to expanding cooperation, adding that the Embassy would continue to support NAPTIP’s mission to safeguard human rights and disrupt trafficking networks in Nigeria.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to bolster joint efforts against trafficking networks operating both within Nigeria and across international borders.
