Navy hands over five suspected IPOB/ESN members to DSS in Anambra

The Nigerian Navy has handed over five suspected members linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), to the Department of State Services (DSS) in Anambra State for further investigation.

According to a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the suspects were apprehended by personnel of the Naval Outpost, Onitsha, operating under Forward Operating Base Amiyi in Ogbaru Local Government Area following credible intelligence on suspected criminal activities in the area.

Preliminary investigations reportedly linked one of the suspects to the coordination of the group’s activities within affected communities, while others were alleged to be associated with its wider operational network.

The Navy further stated that intelligence gathered indicated the existence of locations allegedly used for meetings and recruitment activities connected to the group.

In line with inter-agency security protocols, the suspects were formally handed over to the DSS Anambra State Command for detailed investigation and appropriate action.

The Naval authorities said the operation reflects the service’s continued commitment to internal security support operations and broader efforts to counter violent extremism and criminal activities within joint operational areas.

The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its readiness to sustain collaboration with relevant security agencies to ensure peace, stability, and the protection of lives and property across the country.
