NDLEA key to Africa’s new drug control plan — AU Commission

The African Union (AU) Commission has identified Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as a central partner in shaping the continent’s next action plan on drug control and crime prevention, citing the agency’s critical role in law enforcement across Africa.

This was disclosed on Monday during an assessment visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja by a three-member AU delegation led by Dr. Olubusayo Akinola, Head of Social Welfare, Drug Control and Crime Prevention. She was accompanied by Dr. Abiola Olaleye, Senior Drug Epidemiology and Research Officer, and Prof. Johan Strijdom, Senior Drug Control Consultant.

The visit was part of the AU’s evaluation of its current Plan of Action on Drug Control and Crime Prevention (2019–2025), and the groundwork for the next phase covering 2026 to 2030.

“We understand the pivotal role NDLEA plays in drug enforcement on the continent,” said Dr. Akinola. “The new action plan will not be complete without inputs from NDLEA Nigeria. You are at the forefront of law enforcement in Africa.”

The AU team commended the NDLEA for its consistent delivery of policy-relevant data that has helped shape continental drug control efforts. They also discussed institutional gaps and areas for technical assistance, including support for forensic science, canine units, and capacity development.

NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), welcomed the delegation and underscored the urgency of the AU’s mission. “We are pleased that the African Union is engaging national counterparts directly,” he said. “This practical approach will ensure a more effective and responsive continental framework.”

Marwa warned of a growing drug crisis on the continent, citing estimates that while global drug use may rise by 10–11%, Africa is projected to see a spike of up to 40%. “This alarming trend demands urgent and coordinated action. We commend the AU’s leadership in confronting this challenge,” he said.
