NDLEA seizes cannabis packaged as green tea at Lagos airport

A consignment of illicit drugs disguised as green tea has been intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The NDLEA’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, revealed on Sunday that 66 parcels of Loud, a potent cannabis strain weighing 62.2 kilograms, were concealed in green tea wrappings. Acting on credible intelligence, the agency had been monitoring the shipment for over three weeks before a joint examination was conducted last Thursday. The consignment originated in Thailand and arrived via the UAE on an Emirates Airlines flight.

In a separate operation in Lagos last Monday, NDLEA operatives seized 1,665 kilograms of skunk, another cannabis strain, along the Lekki-Ajah expressway, arresting suspects Gidado Ayinde and Obanla Oluwafemi.

Further arrests occurred in Kaduna along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway, where 29-year-old Goodluck Nnaemeka was apprehended with 612 bottles of codeine-based syrup and 2,970 pills of flunitrazepam. Additionally, a 52-year-old wanted drug dealer, Kabiru Musa (also known as KB), was arrested in Kurmin Mashi with 25.7 kilograms of skunk.

In Edo State, 9 kilograms of Loud were found hidden in the spare tire compartment of a vehicle driven by Atari Israel, 45. Two women, Favour Joy and Joy Igwe, were also arrested in Benin City with 106.57 kilograms of skunk, 1 kilogram of Loud, 800 grams of Colorado, and 302 grams of methamphetamine.

Meanwhile, NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy efforts continue across Nigeria. NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised the agency’s officers in Lagos, Kaduna, and Edo for their commitment to reducing both drug supply and demand.
