NEMA warns Ohaji/Egbema residents to prepare for possible flood evacuation

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service (FFS), has conducted a flood impact assessment in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, following rising floodwaters and alerts from local residents.

The joint assessment team, led by Assistant Chief Search and Rescue Officer, Mr. Nweze Innocent, visited affected areas of the Abacheke community, accompanied by Mr. Nwabuchi Eminent, Secretary to the Traditional Ruler. The team observed increasing water levels already encroaching into residential zones, with several parts of the community showing early signs of submergence.

In Ogboru village, key infrastructure has already been impacted, including:

  • Abacheke Primary Health Centre

  • The Apostolic Church and other religious institutions

  • Salzan Industries

  • Community Primary School, which has been shut down in anticipation of worsening conditions

A similar situation was reported in Udekpunata village, where both farmlands and homes are being overtaken by floodwaters. Many local farmers have resorted to early harvesting of unripe crops to mitigate potential losses.

During the assessment, Mr. Nweze issued a strong advisory to residents of 28 flood-prone villages—including Ogboru, Edeakamaya, Olutu, Ipo, Eze Abacheke, Deyezegbe, Ogbede, and Okishipai—urging them to prepare for possible evacuation to higher ground. He emphasized that current water levels, combined with seasonal forecasts, indicate a high risk of intensified flooding in the weeks ahead.

Reflecting on the 2022 flood disaster that submerged the entire community, Mr. Nwabuchi Eminent recalled the establishment of an IDP camp in Ogboru village for displaced residents. He noted that traditional authorities have since ramped up community sensitization—discouraging construction on waterways, encouraging sanitation, and promoting emergency preparedness.

Mr. Nwabuchi commended NEMA and the Federal Fire Service for their continued support, timely response, and commitment to safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of the Egbema communities.
