The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) held a hearing on Thursday for a petition submitted by the Hotel Owners and Managers Association of Lagos (HOMAL).
The association, represented by its Director General, Adeniyi Ologun, and its legal counsel, Prof. Adeola Sanni SAN, raised concerns about the two Supplementary Multi-Year Tariff Orders (MYTO) approved by NERC in April and May 2024.
HOMAL argued that the respective Distribution Companies (DisCos) failed to conduct consultations before revising the tariff methodology. NERC’s Vice Chairman, who chaired the hearing panel, countered that the tariff review was conducted properly, including stakeholder consultations, and emphasized that the MYTO methodology remains unchanged. Instead, parameters such as foreign exchange rates and inflation were adjusted.
The petitioners did not include the DisCos in their complaint, despite their issues being related to them. NERC will issue a ruling addressing the type of tariff review, its basis, and the procedures for implementing the existing tariff methodology.
