NFF appoints Finidi George as Super Eagles head coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Finidi George as the new Head Coach of the Senior Men’s National Football Team, the Super Eagles. This decision follows the approval of the NFF’s Technical and Development Committee.

George, a former ace winger, served as assistant to José Santos Peseiro for 20 months before assuming the interim role of Head Coach. During this period, he led the team in two friendly matches in Morocco last month, where they secured a notable victory against Ghana but suffered a defeat against Mali.

A renowned figure in Nigerian football, George was a key member of the ‘Golden Generation’ that clinched the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations title and represented Nigeria in multiple FIFA World Cup tournaments. With 62 caps for his country, he brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

Having played for esteemed clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis, George’s journey in football spans both domestic and international arenas. Notably, he scored the goal that secured Nigeria’s debut appearance in the FIFA World Cup, a historic moment in Algerian soil in 1993.

Now, George faces the immediate challenge of guiding the Super Eagles to victory in crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic. With the team currently trailing in third place in Group C of the African campaign, these upcoming fixtures hold significant importance for Nigeria’s World Cup aspirations.
