The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive measures to halt the escalating wave of violent killings across the country, with particular concern over recent attacks in Jos.
Reacting to the incident, the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, condemned the attacks, describing them as senseless and deeply disturbing.
He noted that the violence in Plateau State mirrors a troubling trend of recurring attacks in other parts of the country, including Benue State, Kaduna State, and Zamfara State, where numerous innocent citizens have continued to lose their lives.
“We strongly condemn these senseless killings and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims,” Ojukwu stated, emphasising that the right to life must be upheld at all times.
The NHRC boss stressed that beyond condemnation, immediate and concrete actions are required to end the violence and ensure accountability. He urged the Federal Government to act decisively to stop the atrocities and bring perpetrators to justice, warning that continued inaction and lack of accountability could embolden attackers.
Ojukwu also called on security agencies to intensify efforts in protecting lives and property by deploying additional personnel to affected communities to prevent further attacks.
He further advocated for thorough investigations into the incidents and the prompt prosecution of those responsible, noting that justice must not only be served but seen to be served as a deterrent.
The senior advocate underscored the need to provide support for victims and survivors, including compensation, medical care, and adequate protection for vulnerable groups affected by the violence.
While commending efforts by the Plateau State Government, he maintained that more decisive measures are required to address the crisis effectively.
Ojukwu also highlighted the importance of addressing the underlying drivers of the recurring violence, such as poverty, inequality, and hate speech, warning that failure to tackle these root causes could exacerbate instability.
“The NHRC will not relent in advocating for the protection of human rights in Nigeria. We demand justice for the victims and their families. The right to life is non-negotiable,” he said.
