Nigeria, Egypt elevate relations to comprehensive partnership, introduce visa waiver for diplomats

Nigeria and Egypt have officially upgraded their bilateral relations to a “Comprehensive Partnership,” emphasizing mutual respect for each nation’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. This agreement was solidified during the third round of political consultations held in Cairo, with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, leading the discussions.

The Nigerian delegation included Minister of Water Resources Prof. Joseph Utsev and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Senator Abubakar Kyari. Both nations committed to intensifying coordination on regional and international issues, particularly to strengthen the African Union’s capacity to address continental challenges and promote integration. They also pledged joint efforts to advance democracy, good governance, and the objectives outlined in the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Acknowledging the shared threats of terrorism and extremism, Nigeria and Egypt agreed to enhance security cooperation through the exchange of best practices in comprehensive counter-terrorism strategies. Both countries also reiterated their commitment to supporting conflict resolution in Africa through peacebuilding and sustainable development initiatives.

On the economic front, the two nations recognized the potential for increased bilateral trade and investment. They agreed to promote collaboration between governmental and private sectors in key areas such as agriculture, energy, telecommunications, and infrastructure. Plans to establish a Nigeria-Egypt Chamber of Commerce by the end of 2025 were discussed, with the formal launch anticipated during the fourth round of ministerial-level consultations in Abuja in 2026.

The ministers commended the recent visa exemption agreements for diplomatic passport holders and the revision of visa fees for citizens of both countries, reflecting their mutual commitment to facilitating easier travel and stronger interpersonal connections.

The next session of the Joint Committee at the ministerial level is scheduled for the last quarter of 2025, highlighting the ongoing dedication to deepening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Egypt.
