The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed deep grief over the loss of one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Sahabi Harisu, who was fatally shot on January 17, 2025, while on duty. The suspect, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, allegedly an internet fraudster, is accused of the attack.
The EFCC has condemned the circulation of misleading and insensitive narratives on social media regarding the incident. The Commission emphasized that reducing the tragic death of a dedicated officer to baseless online speculation is both callous and inhumane.
The EFCC expressed concern over some commentators siding with the suspect, reiterating that there is no justification for such a violent act against law enforcement officers. The Commission urged the public to respect the grieving family and the institution, avoiding the spread of false information.
The fatal incident occurred during a raid in Ifite, Awka, Anambra State, where EFCC operatives were executing an operation to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters. Despite the team arresting 37 suspects, Ikechukwu resisted the officers, resorting to violence. He allegedly opened fire, killing Harisu and injuring another officer.
Preliminary investigations revealed Ikechukwu’s involvement in suspicious online activities, including coding and dubious medical supply operations. Various electronic devices were seized from his apartment, confirming his links to internet fraud. He is currently in police custody and will face trial.
The EFCC highlighted the growing danger posed by internet fraudsters, warning that these criminals are increasingly engaging in violent and criminal activities such as kidnapping, banditry, and ritual killings. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to combating internet fraud and protecting its officers, vowing that any future attacks will be met with the full force of the law.
While mourning the loss of Harisu, the EFCC expressed gratitude for the support and condolences received from other law enforcement agencies and the public. The Commission remains resolute in its mission to eradicate internet fraud and corruption in Nigeria.
