The Federal Government has confirmed sustained security and intelligence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, resulting in precision air strikes against terrorist targets in Nigeria’s North-West.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government said Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured collaboration with international partners to confront the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism. The cooperation, it noted, is based on intelligence sharing, strategic coordination and other forms of support consistent with international law and mutual respect for sovereignty.
According to the ministry, all counter-terrorism operations are guided by the primacy of protecting civilian lives, preserving national unity and upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity. It stressed that terrorist violence against any community—Christian, Muslim or otherwise—remains an affront to Nigeria’s core values and to international peace and security.
The government further stated that it continues to work through established diplomatic and security channels to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt their financing and logistics, prevent cross-border threats, and strengthen Nigeria’s own security institutions and intelligence capabilities.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to engage relevant partners and keep the public informed through appropriate official channels,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, United States President Donald J. Trump confirmed that U.S. forces conducted what he described as “powerful and deadly” strikes against ISIS-linked elements in North-West Nigeria. In a statement attributed to him, Trump said the operation was carried out under his directive as Commander-in-Chief, targeting terrorists accused of killing civilians, particularly Christians. He added that the strikes were executed by U.S. forces as part of efforts to counter radical terrorism.
The Nigerian government did not provide operational details but reaffirmed its commitment to lawful, coordinated counter-terrorism actions in partnership with allies.
