Nigerian Army acquires combat enablers, reaffirms commitment to apolitical stance and human rights – COAS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has announced that the Nigerian Army (NA) has recently bolstered its operational capabilities with the acquisition of new combat enablers. These acquisitions, which include Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, rifles, and ammunition, are set to enhance the effectiveness of ongoing military operations across the country.

According to Director Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, speaking at the opening ceremony of the Combined Second and Third Quarters Chief of Army Staff Conference 2024, held on Wednesday, August 27, 2024, at the Council of Chiefs Hall in Uyo, General Lagbaja emphasized the positive impact these new assets are already having in the fight against security challenges. “These acquisitions will undoubtedly enhance the effectiveness of troops across various theatres and ultimately firm up the nation’s path to an improved security environment, in furtherance of economic prosperity for the nation,” he stated.

General Lagbaja also highlighted the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to building a well-equipped and professional army, noting the recent purchase of two BELL UH-1 Huey helicopters, among other assets, for the Nigerian Army. He disclosed that pilots are currently undergoing training on these platforms, which will soon be inducted into operations, though initially limited to logistics missions.

Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umoh Eno, who officially opened the conference, commended the ongoing restructuring within the Nigerian Army. He urged the military to maintain its apolitical stance and to continue adhering to the principles of human rights and the rules of engagement in all its operations. Governor Eno also stressed the importance of actionable intelligence and inter-agency synergy for the success of military operations.

The event also featured the presentation of Group Life Assurance cheques to beneficiaries, aligning with one of the pillars of General Lagbaja’s command philosophy, which focuses on sound administration and the welfare of personnel and their families.
