Nigerian Army and NIGCOMSAT collaborate to enhance military communications

The Nigerian Army has committed to partnering with the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) to bolster its communication infrastructure and military operations. Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, announced the collaboration on Thursday, 16 May 2024, during a meeting with NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idereyen, at Army Headquarters in Abuja.

Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, highlighted that the partnership aims to provide secure and reliable communication services for the Army. This includes access to satellite-based telecommunications, navigation, and surveillance, enhancing operational efficiency and effectiveness.

General Lagbaja emphasized the strategic importance of NIGCOMSAT, particularly in supporting military operations in Nigeria’s North East and North West regions. He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Executive Order 5, which mandates the use of domestically produced goods and services. Praising the quality of NIGCOMSAT’s products, Lagbaja expressed his intention to deepen cooperation and support the launch of a new satellite dedicated to enhancing Army operations.

Mrs. Egerton-Idereyen commended the Nigerian Army for its dedication to national security and pledged continued technological support to address security challenges. She announced plans to launch a satellite specifically designed for the Armed Forces, which will significantly enhance military capabilities.

The collaboration between the Nigerian Army and NIGCOMSAT is expected to have substantial impacts on national security and economic development through advanced satellite technology.
