In response to recent allegations and misinformation circulating on social and mainstream media platforms regarding a contentious land dispute between the Nigerian Army and 65 family compounds in Oshogbo, Osun State, the Nigerian Army has issued a statement to address the matter.
In a press statement, Director Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu said the controversy surrounding the land in question predates the tenure of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) since his appointment on 19 June 2023. The agitation over the land has been ongoing for some time, as evidenced by claims of possession of a High Court judgment obtained in January 2023, while Gen Taoreed Lagbaja served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division Nigerian Army in Kaduna.
The Nigerian Army emphasizes that attempts to attribute the land tussle solely to the current COAS are misguided and serve only to tarnish the reputation and integrity of a dedicated public servant. As an institution committed to upholding the rule of law and respecting citizens’ rights, the Nigerian Army asserts its commitment to lawful conduct and adherence to legal obligations.
Acknowledging the judgment of the High Court of Justice of Osun State in the case of Chief Amodu Akanbi Suleiman Folorunsho & Others V. Attorney General of the Federation & Others, the Nigerian Army has initiated an appeal against the lower court’s decision at the Court of Appeal in Akure. It is important to note that the filing of an appeal stays the execution of the court decision, thus maintaining the status quo until the appeal is resolved.
The public is urged to disregard misinformation circulating in the media to prevent being misled by individuals or groups with ulterior motives. The Nigerian Army reassures its commitment to collaborating with relevant authorities to address legitimate concerns and ensure justice prevails.
The timely intervention of Honourable members of the House of Representatives and the Osun State House of Assembly in the matter is appreciated, and the Nigerian Army solicits the understanding and support of stakeholders and the public as efforts continue to maintain peace and security in the nation.
