Nigerian Army dismisses claims of mass resignation due to corruption as baseless

The Nigerian Army has strongly refuted recent reports by Sahara Reporters and other media outlets alleging mass resignations of soldiers due to corruption and low morale.

In a statement, Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu said the Army described the reports as misleading and an attempt to undermine the dedication and service of its personnel.

According to the Army, service is voluntary, allowing personnel to disengage at will in accordance with established procedures outlined in the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service. Discharges are routine and conducted with due diligence, including the preparation of entitlements and pensions, ensuring an orderly process.

The reports, the Army stated, failed to verify the reasons behind personnel discharges, which can include voluntary resignations, medical grounds, career changes, or community service. The suggestion that soldiers are resigning en masse over welfare issues was described as a gross misrepresentation.

Under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the welfare of personnel remains a top priority. Significant measures, such as the Affordable Housing Option for All Soldiers Scheme (AHOOAS), aim to provide dignified post-service life. The Army is also upgrading infrastructure, ensuring timely payment of allowances, and enhancing medical services for personnel and their families. Training and capacity development are ongoing to align with global standards.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to transforming into a well-trained, equipped, and motivated force. It called on media organizations to verify information before publication and to avoid spreading disinformation.

Nwachukwu emphasized that the Nigerian Army will continue prioritizing the welfare and morale of its personnel, maintaining their readiness to defend the nation.
