The Nigerian Army has unequivocally dismissed recent rumours circulating in the media, particularly on social platforms, concerning alleged disruptions in its operational and administrative activities.
In an official statement, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, described the speculations—ranging from claims of leadership confusion to delays in promotions and postings—as entirely unfounded and misleading.
He emphasized that the Army remains a highly structured organization with established protocols to ensure seamless operations, irrespective of the temporary absence of its Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who is currently on official leave.
Before his departure, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Abdulsalami Bagudu Ibrahim, was duly appointed to act in his stead, ensuring the continuity of all routine activities.
Major General Nwachukwu highlighted recent achievements, including the successful conclusion of the Captain-Major Practical Promotion Examination in Akure and the ongoing Master Warrant Officer to Army Warrant Officer Promotion Exercise in Jos. These activities, conducted in accordance with the Army’s 2024 Forecast of Events, are being overseen by the relevant departmental chiefs, as per standard practice.
He further clarified that it is not the responsibility of the COAS to personally oversee postings or promotions, as these functions are routinely handled by departmental chiefs. The results of the current promotion exercises will be released shortly, following the completion of necessary reconciliations.
Reassuring the public, Major General Nwachukwu reaffirmed the Army’s full operational readiness to protect national security. He expressed gratitude to well-meaning Nigerians for their continued support and prayers for Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, while emphasizing that all training, operational, and administrative functions remain on course under the capable leadership of Major General Ibrahim, pending the COAS’s return.
