Nigerian Navy celebrates 68th anniversary

Rear Admiral Joseph Daniel Akpan, Chief of Policy and Plans at the Naval Headquarters, delivered a welcome address on behalf of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of the Naval Staff, during a press conference today to announce the Nigerian Navy’s 68th Anniversary Celebrations.

Scheduled from May 24 to June 1, 2024, in Lagos, the Navy Week will feature various events commemorating the establishment of the Nigerian Navy on June 1, 1956. Admiral Akpan highlighted the Navy’s evolution from a modest fleet to a significant force in the West African sub-region and beyond, emphasizing its current operational readiness and recent successes under Vice Admiral Ogalla’s leadership.

Key achievements include the effective fight against crude oil theft through OPERATION DELTA SANITY, which has led to increased oil exports, and maintaining zero piracy status. The Navy has enhanced its fleet and infrastructure, receiving new vessels and establishing a base in Enugu State.

The celebrations will feature religious services, medical outreach, and a high-profile maritime exercise with international participation. The International Maritime Conference, focusing on maritime security and the Blue Economy, will host delegates from over 30 countries.

The event will culminate with the commissioning of new naval assets and the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria. Admiral Akpan thanked the press for their support and urged them to publicize the Navy’s efforts and events.
