Nigerian Navy cracks down on illegal oil activities in Bayelsa

In a significant operation, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH, under the aegis of Operation DELTA SANITY, has made crucial interventions against illegal oil activities in Bayelsa State. On Saturday, August 3, 2024, the naval patrol team discovered and disconnected an illegal connection on the Tebidaba/Brass Manifold located in West Boma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

The illegal connection, designed to siphon crude oil from the manifold, posed a severe threat to the region’s economic and environmental well-being. The swift action by the Nigerian Navy effectively shut down this unauthorized operation, preventing further theft and potential ecological damage.

Continuing their patrol, the team proceeded to the Azagbene general area, where they uncovered and dismantled two illegal refining sites. These sites were laden with stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). The exact quantities of the recovered materials were not immediately disclosed, but the seizure represents a substantial disruption to the illicit oil trade in the region.

The discovery of these illegal operations highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Nigeria in securing its oil infrastructure and combating the widespread issue of oil theft and illegal refining. Such activities not only result in significant economic losses for the country but also cause extensive environmental damage, particularly in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.

The Nigerian Navy has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime resources and infrastructure. Operations like DELTA SANITY are part of broader efforts to curtail illegal oil activities, which have long plagued the country’s oil sector. The success of these operations is critical to ensuring the security of Nigeria’s oil production and the protection of its environment.

The Navy’s leadership has called for continued cooperation from local communities and other stakeholders in reporting suspicious activities and supporting law enforcement efforts. The crackdown in Bayelsa State serves as a stern warning to those engaged in illegal oil-related activities that the Nigerian Navy remains vigilant and resolute in its mission to uphold the law and protect the nation’s resources.
