In a significant operation under the ongoing crackdown on illegal oil activities, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH, as part of Operation DELTA SANITY, on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, uncovered and deactivated an illegal refining site in Azagbene, Bayelsa State.
The operation targeted the site where an unspecified amount of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) was found, further demonstrating the Navy’s commitment to eradicating illegal refining activities in the region.
The operation, which involved a coordinated effort by naval personnel, led to the destruction of the refining site, effectively disrupting the illicit production and distribution chain.

The illegal refinery was equipped with makeshift equipment used in the unauthorized refining of petroleum products, a common but dangerous practice that poses significant environmental and economic threats.
In addition to the refinery raid, the Navy’s patrol team conducted a separate operation at Isiama Jetty in Bayelsa State, where they discovered a wooden boat laden with sacks of illegally refined petroleum products. The boat and its cargo were promptly impounded, preventing the distribution of the contraband within local markets.
Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shettima, the Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, commended the swift action of the NNS SOROH and the patrol team, noting that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to clamp down on illegal oil refining and smuggling activities in the Niger Delta. He emphasized the Navy’s determination to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime environment and natural resources.

“The Nigerian Navy remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the protection of our nation’s maritime assets. Operations like DELTA SANITY are crucial in our ongoing fight against oil theft, environmental degradation, and economic sabotage,” Rear Admiral Shettima stated.
He also reiterated the Navy’s call for community cooperation, urging locals to provide timely information on illegal activities to aid in the fight against oil theft and refining. The Navy’s intensified patrols and intelligence-driven operations are part of a comprehensive approach to disrupt illegal refining networks and bring those involved to justice.

The seizure and deactivation of the illegal refining site and the interception of the boat at Isiama Jetty represent significant steps in the Navy’s mission to uphold law and order in the Niger Delta region. The Nigerian Navy continues to warn that those engaged in such illegal activities will face the full force of the law.
