Nigerian Navy dismantles large illegal refining operation in Bonny

Personnel from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny have successfully uncovered and dismantled a large-scale illegal refining site in the Bonny area, as part of intensified efforts to combat oil theft and environmental pollution in the Niger Delta. The illegal facility was found to be operating with two cooking tanks, six storage tanks, several dug-out pits, and a wooden boat heavily laden with stolen crude oil.

The operation, led by the Nigerian Navy, is part of a broader crackdown on illegal refining activities that have contributed to both economic losses and environmental degradation in the region. According to the Navy, the discovery of this site is a significant achievement in the fight against oil-related crimes that have long plagued the country.

In addition to deactivating the refining equipment, the Navy also seized the crude oil found at the site, preventing its further processing and distribution through illicit channels. The extent of the illegal operation underscores the scale of crude oil theft in the area, which has been a growing concern for both local authorities and oil companies operating in the Niger Delta.

Speaking on the development, a spokesperson for the Nigerian Navy emphasized their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s resources, stating that more operations of this nature are planned to ensure the complete eradication of illegal refineries and oil theft in the region.

The Navy continues to collaborate with other security agencies and stakeholders to track down and dismantle similar operations, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance stance on economic sabotage. The shutdown of the illegal refining site is expected to send a strong message to criminal networks involved in the illicit oil trade.

This development comes amid rising calls for stronger action against oil theft, which significantly impacts Nigeria’s oil revenue and contributes to the environmental destruction of the Niger Delta region.
