Nigerian Navy launches operation Delta Sanity II

On December 30, 2024, the Nigerian Navy launched Operation Delta Sanity II, aimed at intensifying efforts to combat crude oil theft and secure Nigeria’s oil resources. The operation was officially flagged off by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, at Nigerian Navy Ship PATHFINDER in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Building on the successes of Operation Delta Sanity I, which began in January 2024 under the leadership of Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, the new phase incorporates advanced technology and enhanced collaboration with stakeholders.

Key Achievements in 2024

The first phase of the operation saw significant results, including:

  • 215 suspects and 26 vessels arrested.
  • 468 illegal refinery sites deactivated.
  • Seizure of 6.5 million litres of stolen crude oil and 7 million litres of illegally refined Automated Gas Oil.
  • Deactivation of 361 wooden boats, 1,107 dugout pits, and 279 storage tanks.

These efforts contributed to increasing Nigeria’s crude oil production to approximately 1.8 million barrels per day, according to Senator Lokpobiri.

New Enhancements in Operation Delta Sanity II

The Chief of Naval Staff announced that the second phase would feature:

  • Increased aerial surveillance using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), armed drones, and maritime domain awareness systems.
  • Enhanced collaboration with sister security services, agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Non-kinetic measures to bolster efficiency and impact.

The operation aims to push crude oil production beyond 2 million barrels per day, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directives to curb oil theft and boost Nigeria’s economy.

Leadership’s Commitment

Senator Lokpobiri praised the Navy’s efforts, expressing optimism for greater achievements, while Vice Admiral Ogalla urged all participating commands and units to meet operational objectives. He also conveyed gratitude to President Tinubu for his continued support of the Navy’s mission.

Operation Delta Sanity II is expected to further secure the nation’s oil assets and enhance Nigeria’s economic stability.
