- Partnership to enhance weather services across Nigeria’s key sectors
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) have formalized their collaboration with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance the use of meteorological and climatological data across Nigeria’s 36 states.
Signed on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, in Abuja, the MoU aims to strengthen the implementation of climate-smart information and standard weather services in sectors such as agriculture, aviation, telecommunications, marine, oil and gas, mining, and disaster management.
Key Remarks by NiMet and NGF
Professor Charles Anosike, Director General of NiMet, described the partnership as a vital step in improving weather information dissemination to farmers and supporting state airports.
“Without NiMet information, aircraft cannot operate. This relationship is critical, and the signing of this MoU is a milestone in expanding access to essential weather data,” said Prof. Anosike. He also announced that the public presentation of the 2025 NiMet Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) is scheduled for February 4, 2025.
In his remarks, the Director General of the NGF, Alhaji Abdulateef O.T. Shittu, praised NiMet’s long-standing contributions, noting that the partnership builds on a decade of informal collaboration.
“This MoU solidifies our commitment to leveraging NiMet’s expertise in providing climate data for agricultural development and other critical sectors across all states,” Shittu stated.
Impact of the MoU
The agreement is expected to support state governments in addressing climate change challenges, improving disaster management, and driving sustainable development through better use of weather and climate data.
This milestone collaboration highlights a shared vision for bolstering resilience and preparedness in Nigeria’s socio-economic sectors, ensuring that states are better equipped to manage the impacts of climate change.
