The Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, has vowed to take decisive action against corruption within the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), pledging that no effort will be spared in identifying and punishing corrupt officials.
Addressing senior officers at the launch of a two-day workshop focused on strengthening the service’s core values, Nandap expressed deep concern over recent incidents that have tarnished the NIS’s reputation. “We gather today at a critical juncture in our service’s history, where the fabric of our integrity is threatened by the actions of a few,” she said.
Nandap highlighted disturbing cases of officers engaging in bribery, soliciting illegal payments, and even appearing intoxicated while on duty. “These actions not only betray the trust of the public but also undermine our very purpose as guardians of our nation’s borders and protectors of its citizens,” she lamented.
The Comptroller General emphasized the need for a united front to combat corruption, describing it as a “hydra-headed monster” that requires collective effort to defeat. She urged officers to commit to rooting out corrupt elements within the service and fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and zero tolerance for corruption.
Nandap also revealed that the NIS had recently launched a nationwide campaign to address corruption and enhance service delivery. “These sustained efforts are geared towards ensuring accountability, transparency, and a culture of excellence in our operations,” she noted.
As the workshop on mitigating corruption, improving service delivery, and promoting ethical compliance commenced, Nandap called on officers to reflect on the core values of the NIS, which include integrity, discipline, professionalism, and patriotism. “Our conduct must reflect these values,” she said, adding, “I pledge to lead by example, and I expect the same commitment from each of you.”
Nandap concluded by urging the officers to rise to the challenge and make their collective efforts a catalyst for a new era of excellence in the Nigeria Immigration Service.
