The Nigeria Police Force has summoned Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for an interview over allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, reasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.
According to a letter signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence, dated August 19, 2024, Ajaero’s name emerged during ongoing investigations into these serious charges. The letter directs Ajaero to report to the IRT Complex at Abattoir by Guzape Junction on Tuesday, August 20th, at 10:00 AM. It further warns that failure to appear may result in the issuance of an arrest warrant.
A statement issued by the NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Mr. Benson Upah, revealed that a personal message was also sent to Comrade Ajaero by SP Moshood, indicating that police had attempted to deliver the letter to Labour House, but the premises were locked.
Mr. Upah noted with concern that the letter did not address Comrade Ajaero by his official title as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress. He further commented that the recent developments suggest ongoing tensions following last week’s police raid on the NLC headquarters in Abuja.
In a communique issued after the raid, the NLC expressed outrage over the police’s actions and criticized the high casualty rate during related protests. The Congress had urged the government to engage in dialogue with the protest organizers while clarifying that it was not involved in the protests. The NLC has since demanded an apology from both the police and the government.
