- Calls for special court, accelerated hearings
The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Mr. Mele Kyari, has urged the judiciary to support efforts against crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism to enhance the oil and gas sector’s contribution to national economic growth.
According to Chief Corporate Communications Officer NNPC Ltd. Abuja Olufemi O. Soneye, speaking at the National Judges Capacity Building Workshop on the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, organized by the National Judicial Institute (NJI) and INVESTIN 234 in Abuja, Kyari emphasized the negative impact of these crimes on the gains of the PIA. He proposed the establishment of a special court or the acceleration of hearings for such cases.

Kyari highlighted the critical role of the judiciary in supporting the security measures implemented by NNPC, law enforcement, and industry stakeholders. He called for swift trials and stringent sanctions to deter offenders.
NNPC remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the PIA, Kyari stated, emphasizing the importance of maximizing the benefits of Nigeria’s natural resources for economic and social development.
Kyari also praised Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola and the workshop organizers for the opportunity to address the judiciary on this crucial issue.
