The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on transparency, deeper disclosures and compliance with global EITI standards.
The commitment followed a recent visit by EITI Africa Country Director, Gilbert Makore, to the NNPC Towers as part of Nigeria’s ongoing validation against the 2023 EITI Standard.
Makore commended NNPC Ltd. for its measurable progress in addressing outstanding validation requirements, noting that the company’s disclosures were increasingly aligning with EITI expectations.
Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described EITI as an important platform for strengthening investor confidence and promoting accountability across the extractive sector.
Ojulari said participation in the initiative provides NNPC with an opportunity to demonstrate its governance practices and transparency record while reinforcing stakeholder confidence in the company.
During the visit, technical sessions were held with NNPC’s Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) Division to assess progress made in closing identified gaps in the validation process.
Makore was accompanied by EITI Validation Lead, Riley Zecca; NEITI Director, Policy, Planning and Strategy, Dieter Bassi; Director, Technical, Sa’ad Balarabe; and Director, Communications and Stakeholder Management, Obiageli Onuorah.
The engagement underscored the continued collaboration between NNPC Ltd., EITI and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) in strengthening disclosure practices, governance and accountability in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
