NNPC Ltd, Partners bolster cancer care with new mammography centre in Nasarawa

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), in partnership with TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, SAPETRO, CNOOC, and PRIME 130, has launched an advanced mammography centre at the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
In a statement, Chief Corporate Communications Officer NNPC Ltd., Abuja Olufemi Soneye said this centre marks NNPC Ltd.’s second such facility, following a similar project in Adamawa State’s Gombi Local Government Area.

The centre is part of NNPC Ltd.’s broader initiative to enhance early cancer detection and treatment access across Nigeria, helping combat the country’s high cancer mortality rates. The NNPC Foundation also offers a series of free cancer screening programs to complement these efforts.

Representing Mr. Bala Wunti, Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, Mr. Sani Kabo, Head of Business Services, underscored NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to healthcare improvements. He emphasized that the centre aligns with NNPC Ltd. GCEO Mr. Mele Kyari’s vision for a stronger healthcare system in Nigeria. “We hope this facility will become a vital resource for early cancer diagnosis and treatment under the state government’s stewardship,” Kabo said.

Mr. Matthieu Bouyer, Managing Director and Country Chair of TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, represented by Mrs. Tonye Osifo, Acting General Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility, reiterated TotalEnergies’ commitment to health partnerships. Bouyer highlighted that this facility is among 84 infrastructure projects TotalEnergies has delivered since 2016 and ties into its #WorkingWithCancer initiative to support those impacted by cancer.

Equipped with a Senographe Pristina 3D mammography system, digital breast tomosynthesis, and stereotactic biopsy capabilities, the centre can conduct over 120 exams daily, increasing diagnostic capacity in Nasarawa State and the North Central region. Additional features include treatment rooms, a radiologist’s office, and a 20-person waiting area for enhanced patient comfort.

NNPC Ltd. and its partners remain dedicated to impactful projects that advance community health across Nigeria.
