The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced a significant step in its commitment to provide affordable alternative fuel options for motorists in Nigeria. Through a strategic partnership with NIPCO Gas Limited, the company aims to deploy Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across the nation.
Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Garba Deen Muhammad, stated that this collaboration marks a groundbreaking effort to expand CNG infrastructure, enhance CNG accessibility, and promote the adoption of cleaner and more cost-effective fuel options for buses, cars, and Keke NAPEP. The initiative is expected to substantially reduce transportation costs and foster sustainable economic growth for the nation.
Under the NNPC-NIPCO strategic partnership, the plan is to construct 35 state-of-the-art CNG stations nationwide, which will include three Mother stations. When these stations become fully operational, they are projected to serve over 200,000 vehicles daily, making a significant impact on the cost of automobile fuel and transportation for Nigerians.
The project will be carried out in phases. The first phase will consist of 21 CNG stations, aimed at supporting intra-city transportation, and is set to be completed by the first quarter of 2024. The second phase will include 35 CNG stations, supporting inter-city transportation, and is expected to be ready by late 2024. In addition, NNPC Retail will deploy an additional 56 stations across the country, further bolstering CNG availability.
NIPCO Gas Limited, with its current operation of 14 CNG stations and successful conversion of over 7,000 vehicles to run on CNG, brings valuable technical expertise and field experience to ensure the success of this initiative. This partnership is expected to have a positive impact on Nigeria’s economy by leveraging the country’s abundant natural gas resources and creating new business value chains and job opportunities, while also contributing to reduced carbon emissions.
NNPC Limited anticipates increased private sector involvement from oil marketing companies to further expand CNG penetration and availability throughout the country.
The commitment of NNPC Limited remains steadfast in delivering reliable energy solutions and creating lasting value for Nigeria’s prosperous future in collaboration with its partners.
