- IGP Orders establishment of CRU in States, appoints new CRU head
The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirming his commitment to enhancing the mechanisms for addressing complaints within the Police Force, has conveyed the Nigeria Police’s determination to strengthen its partnership with the Public Complaints Commission (PCC). This collaboration will primarily focus on bolstering training initiatives and the exchange of knowledge.
As communicated by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stationed at Force Headquarters in Abuja, this move follows the recent visit of the Honourable Chief Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission, Hon. Abimbola Ayo-Yusuf, and her team to the Force Headquarters. During this visit, the IGP and the delegation extensively deliberated on matters of shared interest and potential avenues for cooperation.
Building on the IGP’s resolute commitment to enhancing accountability and transparency within the Police system, and in light of the recent strengthening of monitoring units such as the X-Squad and the Complaint Response Unit (CRU), along with the establishment of CRUs in all states, a significant step has been taken. The IGP has authorized the appointment of CSP El-Mustapha Sani as the new head of the Complaint Response Unit. This decision follows the reassignment of DCP Markus I. Basiran to the role of DC Homicide at the Force Criminal Investigations Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
CSP El-Mustapha Sani, an experienced officer with an exceptional service track record, brings a wealth of expertise to this pivotal position. His extensive background in resolving complaints within the Public Complaint Bureau of the Force Public Relations Department, combined with his unwavering commitment to justice and fairness, makes him a fitting choice to lead the Complaint Response Unit.
Furthermore, in line with his directives to ensure accountability and combat unprofessional conduct, the IGP reiterates his instruction for all Commissioners of Police overseeing State Commands to establish dedicated Complaint Response Unit Offices at their respective State Command Headquarters. This initiative aims to bolster the IGP’s unwavering determination to combat corruption and uphold professionalism.
The IGP extends an invitation to all stakeholders, including the general public, civil society organizations, and other law enforcement agencies, to collaborate closely with the Police Complaint Response Units. Such cooperation is instrumental in facilitating the effective discharge of their duties, which include curbing misconduct, addressing excesses, and promoting professionalism among police officers nationwide. He underscores the Force’s steadfast commitment to transparency, accountability, and safeguarding citizens’ rights. These efforts are integral to nurturing public trust and fostering a harmonious relationship between the police and the people.
