NSCDC dismantle illegal mineral storage network in Rivers State

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), South-South Mining Marshals, have uncovered and dismantled an illegal mineral storage network operating within the Onne axis of Rivers State, in a major operation aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources and protecting local communities.

According to National Public Relations Officer Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), CSC Babawale Afolabi, the operation, led by Deputy Superintendent of Corps (DSC) Emmanuel Abiahu, was executed following credible intelligence and in collaboration with officials from the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. During the raid, the team discovered warehouses stockpiling mined minerals without valid permits, licences, or proof of royalty payments to the Federal Government.

According to DSC Abiahu, such illegal activities not only deprive the nation of vital revenue but also pose significant environmental and safety risks to residents.

He noted that the enforcement action aligns with the directive of the Commandant General of NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, who has consistently emphasized the need to protect Nigeria’s solid mineral wealth and promote a fair and regulated mining sector for legitimate investors and host communities.

Abiahu warned all operators in the region to adhere strictly to mining regulations or face decisive sanctions, reaffirming the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and the environment through sustained surveillance and inter-agency collaboration.

The NSCDC urged citizens to support ongoing efforts by providing credible information that can help curb illegal mining and ensure Nigeria’s natural resources benefit the people and the nation at large.
