NSCDC pledges compliance with cybercrime act in CNII investigations, prosecutions

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced plans to fully comply with the provisions of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, in the investigation and prosecution of offences relating to Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).

Commandant of the FCT Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, made this known during a one-day internal workshop organized to enlighten personnel from the ICT, Intelligence and Investigation, Legal, and Critical National Assets and Infrastructure departments, as well as officers from Area Commands and Divisions.

Odumosu explained that the move followed a directive from the Commandant General of the Corps, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, in line with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) directive on the application of the Cybercrime Act and the 2024 CNII Protection Order.

He noted that many offenders arrested for vandalizing or stealing CNII components—such as fiber optic cables, transmission towers, communication bases, and ICT-related infrastructure—are still being prosecuted under general laws relating to theft or malicious damage. This, he said, fails to address the broader national security and economic implications of tampering with critical infrastructure.

“The CNII covers networks, systems, and facilities in vital sectors like telecommunications, finance, energy, transportation, and defence, whose disruption could endanger national security and public safety,” Odumosu stated.

He emphasized that safeguarding CNII remains a key mandate of the NSCDC, calling for stronger collaboration and strategic planning to ensure that critical national assets are protected in the digital age.

“This gathering is not just a response to threats but a proactive step toward fostering innovation and ensuring the resilience of our infrastructure,” he added.

Odumosu also urged participants to transfer the knowledge gained from the workshop to their subordinates to strengthen efforts toward eradicating vandalism and infrastructure sabotage across the FCT.
