The Organisation of West African States (OAS) has officially received the keys to its temporary headquarters in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, marking a major milestone in its institutional development and operational expansion in the region.
The handover ceremony brought together representatives of the organisation, Ivorian authorities and other stakeholders involved in establishing the facility.
The temporary headquarters is expected to provide the OAS with an operational base for coordinating programmes, hosting official meetings and strengthening engagement with member states, regional institutions and international partners.
The facility will accommodate staff and provide space for consultations and other activities connected with the organisation’s mandate. The formal handover represents a significant administrative step towards consolidating its presence in Côte d’Ivoire.
Strategic location
The choice of Grand-Bassam reflects the organisation’s efforts to establish a strategic institutional presence in West Africa.
The historic former capital of Côte d’Ivoire is renowned for its cultural and historical heritage. Its proximity to Abidjan also offers convenient access to key government institutions, diplomatic missions and international partners.
The temporary facility is expected to serve as a coordination hub for the OAS’s activities while plans and discussions concerning a permanent headquarters continue.
The ceremony also underscored cooperation between the organisation and the Ivorian authorities, whose support has facilitated the establishment of its operational base.
New phase of institutional development
With the formal handover of the premises, the OAS is poised to strengthen its administrative capacity, improve programme coordination and deepen collaboration with member states and regional stakeholders.
The headquarters is also expected to enhance the organisation’s visibility and provide a dedicated venue for meetings, consultations and initiatives supporting its regional mandate.
OAS officials welcomed the development, describing it as a demonstration of the commitment of the organisation’s partners to its establishment and effective functioning.
