The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has provided recommendations for strategies aimed at enticing second and third generation Nigerians living abroad to contribute actively to the progress and advancement of Nigeria. She shared this guidance during a presentation made to her by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) on a day she was honored as a “Diaspora Icon.” This accolade was bestowed upon her following her selection at the inaugural National Diaspora Merit Award event held in Abuja.
The presentation was led by Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that the potential of the Diaspora community extends far beyond financial remittances, encompassing the invaluable aspects of skill and knowledge transfer. She underscored the growing global trend of technological and digital advancements and how the Diaspora could play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s adaptation to this era.
Reflecting on her recent recognition, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala expressed her profound pride in her Nigerian identity. She conveyed her elation and humility in receiving the award that acknowledges her as a “Diaspora Icon.” She praised the NiDCOM for its dedicated efforts in fostering engagement with the Diaspora community under the adept leadership of its head.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala offered her unwavering support in collaborating with both the Commission and the Federal Government of Nigeria to enhance the well-being of all Nigerians. The Chairman of NiDCOM, while presenting the award, highlighted that it was granted to Dr. Okonjo-Iweala in recognition of her selfless contributions to Nigeria and humanity at large. Additionally, Dabiri-Erewa lauded her as a role model for Nigerian women who aspire to strike a harmonious balance between family commitments and career progression.
