Okpebholo declares war on cultism in Edo

Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered an intensified crackdown on cultism and criminal activities across Edo State, declaring the region unsafe for criminal elements.

According to his Chief Press Secretary to the Gocvernor Fred Itua, the directive was issued during his inaugural security council meeting at Government House, Benin City, late Monday night.

Addressing journalists after the closed-door session, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making security a top priority. He emphasized that the alarming rise in cult-related violence dominated discussions, vowing swift action to restore peace in the state.

“During my campaign, I placed security above all. Cultism in Edo State is unacceptable to my administration. We will not tolerate any further loss of life due to these activities,” the Governor stated. He urged security agencies to collaborate and “smoke out criminals wherever they are hiding,” ensuring safety for residents while making the state inhospitable for perpetrators.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Umoru Peter Ozigi, echoed the Governor’s resolve, revealing that the council discussed critical security concerns and the progress made so far. He assured residents that with the Governor’s support, security agencies are poised to restore peace across the state.

Governor Okpebholo concluded with a firm call for action: “Edo must be safe for everyone to live and do business peacefully, but it will no longer be a haven for criminals.”
